Updated Google Ads Misrepresentation Policy

Google has recently updated its Ads Misrepresentation Policy and Dishonest Pricing Practices. Now, if you do not mislead the cost of your product in your ads, then you’re good to go. But let’s go over what this means exactly…

If you advertise your business through Google Ads, you will need to clearly disclose the full price or payment plan of the product upfront. Practices that are misleading to the customer will now come with consequences (as they should)!

Here are a few examples policy violation:

  1. Bait-and-switch: Deceptively advertising a product or service at an unrealistic low price to get customers to click, but with no genuine intent to sell. Often, they are pressured into buying a different, typically more expensive product after engaging with the bait ad.
  2. Price Exploitation: Exploiting individuals in vulnerable situations or under duress. Using that heightened emotion and immediate need, to demand a payment significantly higher than the prevailing market rate.

Google’s example is: a locksmith threatening to leave the customer unless a cost above what was quoted is paid on the spot.
  3. Promoting apps as free when the customer has to pay to install the app.
  4. Promoting a free trial without clearly stating the trial period or that the user will be automatically charged at the end of the trial.

These changes will take immediate effect this month, and all ads in violation of the new policy will need to be removed by October 28th, with a four-week grace window. If you violate the new terms, your account will be issued a warning, a minimum of seven days before account suspension.
